Sarah Colley
Sarah is an experienced counselor known for deep legal expertise combined with the ability to forge honest partnerships with clients to help them achieve their goals. By prioritizing a listen-first, transparent, practical approach, she helps clients as a part of the team, not the legal wizard behind the curtain. She provides holistic counsel to business leaders in all aspects of branding, marketing and advertising, considering revenue, strategy, and publicity issues in addition to legal implications. Over the years she has partnered with teams crafting compelling narratives for hundreds of Fortune 500 brands, enhancing brand safety measures, and prioritizing risk reduction.
Marketing: Having guided clients promoting their brands for over 23 years, Sarah has deep experience in all aspects of marketing. She has trained client teams of all sizes and counseled and negotiated agreements related to all aspects of the following: traditional and social media marketing and advertising, influencer campaigns, event management, cause marketing, contests and sweepstakes as well as IP vetting, privacy and data, all forms of media placement, agency relationships, talent rights, product placement, sponsorship, research, technology and creative vendors and regulatory issues.
Advertising Transactions: Throughout her career, Sarah has negotiated and helped ad sales teams execute on a wide variety of cutting-edge advertising deals, generating billions of dollars in revenue. She is the trusted architect behind deals ranging from traditional agency-client partnerships to complex licensing agreements in both content and consumer products as well as multi-platform branded entertainment ventures. from deal-making to content production, including targeted linear and non-linear advertising, digital executions, promotional events, and brand-aligned native productions.
Content Production: In the realm of creative execution, Sarah facilitates creativity while ensuring compliance and risk mitigation. She meticulously reviews concepts, layouts, and copy and supports all aspects of content production, negotiating talent and production services deals as well as counseling on such issues as intellectual property use and claim substantiation. Deep experience serving as production legal for long and short form branded content productions enables her to provide clients strategic, cost-effective solutions to help bring their creative projects to fruition.
Digital, Data and Analytics: Agile in the challenging, dynamic world of brands and multi-media platforms, Sarah is experienced in novel legal issues in new media to help future proof client assets and strategies. Her expertise includes counseling clients in digital marketing and advertising, including online community development, social media initiatives, digital content distribution, data-analytics, and technology-driven products and services. She has also provided the legal support to stand up multiple multi-million dollar digital platforms ranging from content distribution to e-commerce.
Previously, Sarah served as Senior Vice President of Ad Sales Legal at Turner Broadcasting and Warner Media and their successive companies. As a key leader for 22 years, she managed large teams responsible for all marketing and advertising-related legal matters across multiple business units. She played pivotal roles in sales and spin-offs of Warner Media subsidiaries, showcasing her strategic acumen and business savvy. Having led teams and guided clients on the inside track of the media industry for over two decades, Sarah also provides consulting services to help clients manage resources, set up processes and structure risk mitigation as an additive resource instead of an obstacle to be navigated.

Rick McMurtry
Rick is a visionary leader in legal and business affairs, with expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Intellectual Property, Music and Commercial Clearance. With a distinguished career spanning three decades, Rick is known for developing robust legal and business affairs teams. His expertise has consistently delivered increased efficiency, cost-savings, and revenue generation. He has deep experience managing the core assets of over 300 media, news, and sports properties worldwide, including CNN, HBO, Warner Bros., MAX and major league sports franchises.
Artificial Intelligence: Rick’s knowledge of both pending and existing legislation, guild agreements, and the policies of well-known AI tools allows him to guide his clients through the ever-evolving field of AI, helping them fully realize the benefits and risks of AI tools, while maintaining compliance with global legislation and contractual obligations. Rick worked closely with the MPA and its member studios to shape legislation concerning cutting-edge issues like artificial intelligence and content protection. He sat “at the table” on behalf of Warner Bros. for the WGA, SAG-AFTRA, and DGA negotiations regarding use of artificial intelligence, and knows not only the terms of those agreements but the “legislative history” behind them as well.
Intellectual Property: Rick has over 30 years of experience clearing, prosecuting, licensing, and protecting trademarks and domain names. He also has deep experience on copyright matters, helping his clients to protect, monetize and enforce their copyrighted works, as well as advising them on clearance and fair use. He is well-known among practitioners in these practice areas, allowing him to quickly address a wide range of issues, whether that’s clearance and registration, licensing IP rights, enforcing those rights, or resolving disputes.
Music: Rick’s deep knowledge of music legal and business affairs matters allows him to help his clients not only manage but maximize their music. He is adept at negotiating high-dollar licensing agreements with music publishers, record labels and collection societies, and has many contacts in the industry. He puts his experience and relationships to work for his clients, helping them to identify opportunities to better monetize their music and reduce costs for music production and licensing.
Advertising & Commercial Clearance: With over two decades of experience reviewing ads for compliance with legal, regulatory, industry, and corporate guidelines, Rick has a broad knowledge of not only legal compliance but brand protection considerations in advising his clients--whether an advertiser or a distributor of advertising. He is an expert on political and issue advocacy advertising, having reviewed thousands of political and advocacy ads in his career.
Prior to joining M C Law Group, Rick served as Chief IP Counsel, Head of Music Legal and Business Affairs, and Head of Commercial Clearance for Turner Broadcasting and its successor companies. Rick now puts that experience to work for his clients, offering practical and tailored solutions to complex problems, helping them to create and innovate while limiting risks and maximizing the value of their creativity.
